The creation of a single euro payments area (SEPA) by 2010 is an initiative of the European Payments Council (EPC), a consortium of banks and bankers’ associations from throughout Europe, including Switzerland. As from January 2008, SEPA credit transfers, and since 2 November 2009, SEPA direct debits can be processed on a Europe-wide, fully automated and standardized basis.
